Julie Derbyshire is an Associate Professor in Nursing and Head of Apprenticeships at Northumbria University in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She has been a Registered Nurse since 1992, beginning her career in neurosciences nursing, where she maintains her clinical expertise through strong links to the regional Neuroscience Unit. She is a committee member of the British Association of Neuroscience Nursing and an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing. Julie has worked in Higher Education for 23 years, in a range of roles predominantly within undergraduate nursing, and has led on nurse degree apprenticeships for the last nine years. Under her leadership, Northumbria was named Apprenticeship Provider of the Year at the Nursing Times Awards 2024. Julie is passionate about the student experience from recruitment through to final destination, and is a committed advocate for widening participation in nursing education
