Mike initially started working for the NHS as a nursing assistant in 1978, he registered as a nurse in 1982. Since qualifying he has specialised in emergency care, initially at St Bartholomew’s and the Westminster Hospital. He undertook one of the first paramedic training programmes in the UK.
From 1991 he was a charge nurse in the emergency department at the Bristol Royal Infirmary where he helped develop the emergency nurse practitioner service. Mike has practised as a nurse practitioner for 21 years, he remains passionate about educating the next generation of emergency nurses.
Mike has authored over 25 articles and contributed to textbooks, for 20 years he has been an editorial board member for an A&E journal. He is a past finalist of the Nursing Times national A&E award and a Fellow of the Faculty of Emergency Nursing. Mike works as a consultant nurse in community urgent care for the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
